How do you get elytra in Minecraft?
Reaching the End Cities
After defeating the Ender Dragon, a gateway portal appears. Throw an Ender Pearl into it to teleport to the outer End islands, which are thousands of blocks away. These islands are made of end stone and chorus plants, and End Cities generate on some of them.
End Cities are tall structures with towers and bridges. You'll need to climb to the top, where an End Ship may be docked. Not every End City has a ship, so you may need to search several islands. Bring blocks, a pickaxe, and a bow to deal with Shulkers.
- End Ships always contain an elytra in an item frame.
- The ship also has a brewing stand, a chest with loot, and a dragon head.
- Shulkers shoot homing projectiles that cause levitation—break line of sight or use a shield.
Looting and Using the Elytra
Once you find an End Ship, go to the top deck and look for an item frame holding the elytra. Break the frame or right-click to take the elytra. You only get one per ship, but you can find multiple ships in different End Cities.
To fly, equip the elytra in your chestplate slot and jump off a high place, then press jump again while falling. You'll glide. To boost, use firework rockets (crafted with paper, gunpowder, and a firework star). Without rockets, you can only glide downward slowly.
- Elytra have 432 durability and can be repaired with phantom membranes.
- Use firework rockets with a duration of 1–3 for speed boosts.
- In Bedrock Edition, you can also use a trident with Riptide to launch yourself in rain.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to bring blocks to bridge between End islands—falling into the void is permanent.
- Not bringing a bow or shield to deal with Shulkers; their levitation can throw you off the island.
- Assuming every End City has a ship—some don't, so you may need to search multiple cities.
