What is the best order to progress in Minecraft?
Early Game: Wood to Iron
Begin by punching trees to collect wood, then craft a crafting table, wooden pickaxe, and other basic tools. Use wooden tools to mine stone, which lets you craft stone tools and a furnace. Next, mine for iron ore, which is commonly found underground at various levels; smelt iron ore into ingots to make iron tools, armor, and a bucket.
Iron is a major step up because it allows you to mine diamonds (iron pickaxe or better is required). While mining, collect coal for torches and other ores like copper and redstone for later use.
Mid Game: Diamonds and Nether
Once you have iron gear, dig down to diamond level (between Y-level -64 and 16 in modern versions, with best odds around Y=-59). Diamonds let you craft diamond tools and armor, and an enchanting table. Build a Nether portal using obsidian (at least 10 blocks) and flint and steel.
In the Nether, gather blaze rods from blazes in nether fortresses, which are needed for brewing and for crafting eyes of ender. Also collect netherite scraps from ancient debris to upgrade your diamond gear to netherite.
Late Game: The End and Beyond
After obtaining blaze powder and ender pearls, craft eyes of ender to locate and activate the End portal. Defeat the Ender Dragon, then explore the End to find elytra and shulker boxes. Post-game, you can build farms, explore ocean monuments, or tackle other challenges.
- Wood → stone tools → iron tools → diamond tools
- Iron pickaxe to mine diamonds
- Nether for blaze rods and netherite
- End for elytra and shulker boxes
Common mistakes
- Rushing to the Nether without iron armor and a shield can lead to quick deaths.
- Skipping enchanting and potions makes later fights much harder.
- Many players forget to bring a water bucket to the Nether, which is useless there anyway, but they might try to use it.
