How do you craft a night's edge in Terraria?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerCraft the Night's Edge at a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar using four swords: Light's Bane or Blood Butcherer, Muramasa, Blade of Grass, and Fiery Greatsword. You need all four in your inventory.

Gathering the Four Swords

Light's Bane is crafted from 10 Demonite Bars at an anvil (corruption worlds). Blood Butcherer is crafted from 10 Crimtane Bars at an anvil (crimson worlds). Muramasa is found in locked Gold Chests in the Dungeon. Blade of Grass is crafted from 12 Stingers, 15 Jungle Spores, and 3 Vines at an anvil. Fiery Greatsword is crafted from 20 Hellstone Bars at an anvil.

You'll need to defeat the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu for Demonite/Crimtane, explore the Dungeon for Muramasa, venture into the Underground Jungle for Stingers and Spores, and mine Hellstone in the Underworld. This is a mid-game weapon, so prepare with good armor and potions.

  • Muramasa requires defeating Skeletron to enter the Dungeon.
  • Hellstone requires a Nightmare Pickaxe or better to mine.
  • You can craft the Night's Edge at either a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar.

Crafting and Uses

Once you have all four swords in your inventory, stand near a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar and open your crafting menu. The Night's Edge will appear as a craftable item. Click it to craft. The Night's Edge is a powerful pre-Hardmode sword that shoots a projectile when swung.

Later, you can upgrade the Night's Edge into the True Night's Edge by combining it with a Broken Hero Sword (dropped by Mothron during the Solar Eclipse after Plantera). The True Night's Edge is used to craft the Terra Blade.

  • The Night's Edge has 42 melee damage and autoswings.
  • It emits a spinning projectile that pierces enemies.
  • You can only craft it once per world unless you gather another set of swords.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to craft it at a regular anvil—you must use a Demon or Crimson Altar.
  • Forgetting that Light's Bane and Blood Butcherer are mutually exclusive; you only need one, depending on your world's evil.
  • Not having all four swords in your inventory at the same time—the recipe won't show otherwise.
