What is the best way to get ore in Terraria?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerThe best way is to explore caves and mine ore veins with a pickaxe, and later use Spelunker Potions to highlight ores. For hardmode ores, smash Demon/Crimson Altars with a Pwnhammer to generate them.

Early Game Mining

Start by digging down from your spawn point or exploring surface caves. Ore veins are most common in the underground and cavern layers. Use a pickaxe to mine them; better pickaxes mine faster and can mine harder ores. Carry torches, platforms, and a grappling hook for safety.

Copper, iron, silver, gold, and their alternatives (tin, lead, tungsten, platinum) generate in the world. You can also find ores in pots, chests, and by breaking background rocks. The Underground Jungle and Desert have unique ores like meteorite (after smashing a shadow orb) and fossil.

  • Spelunker Potion highlights nearby ores and treasure.
  • Mining Potion increases mining speed by 25%.
  • Use bombs and dynamite to clear large areas quickly.

Hardmode and Advanced Methods

After defeating the Wall of Flesh, your world enters Hardmode. Smash Demon Altars or Crimson Altars with a Pwnhammer to generate Hardmode ores: Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, and Adamantite/Titanium. Each altar smashed spawns a new ore in the world, but also spreads corruption/crimson and hallow.

For efficient farming, use a Spelunker Potion and explore the underground with a good pickaxe/drill. Later, you can use the Shroomite Digging Claw or Laser Drill for fast mining. The Extractinator turns silt, slush, and desert fossil into ores and gems.

  • Smash at least 3 altars to get all three Hardmode ore tiers.
  • Chlorophyte ore grows in the Underground Jungle after Plantera.
  • Use a Metal Detector to find ore and treasure nearby.

Common mistakes

  • Smashing too many altars at once—each one spawns more corruption/crimson and can overwhelm your world.
  • Ignoring Spelunker Potions—they make finding ore much faster.
  • Trying to mine Hardmode ores with a pre-Hardmode pickaxe—you need a Molten Pickaxe or better.
