What do you need to make an enchantment table in Minecraft?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerYou need 1 book, 2 diamonds, and 4 obsidian blocks to craft an enchantment table.

Materials List

To craft an enchantment table, gather: 1 book (3 paper + 1 leather), 2 diamonds, and 4 obsidian. Obsidian is obtained by mining with a diamond or netherite pickaxe, or by letting water flow onto lava.

Diamonds are found deep underground, usually at Y-levels -59 to 16. Books require paper from sugar cane and leather from cows, so you'll need to do a bit of farming or hunting.

  • 1 book (3 paper + 1 leather)
  • 2 diamonds
  • 4 obsidian
  • Diamond pickaxe for obsidian

Crafting and Using It

Place the book in the top-middle slot of a crafting table, the two diamonds in the middle-left and middle-right slots, and the four obsidian in the bottom row and the middle-bottom slot. This yields one enchantment table.

To use it, place the table down and right-click. You'll need XP levels and lapis lazuli to enchant. Surrounding the table with bookshelves (15 bookshelves for max level 30) boosts the available enchantments.

  • Book top-center
  • Diamonds middle-left and middle-right
  • Obsidian bottom row and middle-bottom
  • Add bookshelves for better enchants

Common mistakes

  • Using a stone pickaxe on obsidian—it won't drop; you need diamond or netherite.
  • Forgetting lapis lazuli—you can't enchant without it.
  • Placing bookshelves too close or too far—they need exactly one block gap from the table.
