Is netherite armor worth crafting early in Minecraft?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerUsually not early, since netherite requires ancient debris and a long trip to the Nether, while iron and diamond gear often protect you well enough at first.

Why netherite waits

Netherite is the strongest common armor in the game, but it needs netherite scrap from ancient debris, which is found deep in the Nether. Early on, that trip can take a long time, and the tools needed to mine ancient debris require a diamond pickaxe. Most players build a basic set of iron and diamond gear first.

Once you have a stable base and enough diamonds, netherite becomes much more practical. The upgrade is also worth it if you plan a long survival run or a difficult boss fight.

When it makes sense

Consider crafting netherite once you have a reliable food supply, a good enchanting setup, and spare materials to replace gear that gets damaged. Netherite also keeps items from burning in lava, which can save valuable gear during mining trips.

Plan your upgrade path. Smithing templates and gold are needed too, so gather them before you go hunting for debris. A rushed trip without the right tools can waste more time than it saves.

If you plan to raid large areas of the Nether, the extra durability can save time and materials compared with replacing iron gear every few trips.

  • Get a diamond pickaxe before hunting debris
  • Build a basic iron and diamond set first
  • Gather smithing templates and gold early
  • Upgrade once your base is stable

Common mistakes

  • Rushing into the Nether with weak armor and no food.
  • Spending all your diamonds on netherite before you have a dependable enchanting setup.
