How do you build a house for NPCs in Terraria?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerBuild a small enclosed room with walls on all sides, a door, a table, a chair and a light source. Once the room is valid, a suitable NPC may move in.

The basic requirements

NPCs in Terraria need a valid housing space before they will move in. The room needs walls on all sides and a door, and it must be large enough to count as a room, typically several blocks wide and tall. Place a table and a chair inside, plus a light source such as a torch.

Many NPCs also have preferences for specific items or biomes. Once your room is valid, the game will show a housing notice when a suitable NPC is ready to move in.

  • Enclose the room with walls and a door
  • Place a table and a chair inside
  • Add a light source such as a torch
  • Check the housing notice for the NPC status

Attract the right NPCs

Different NPCs prefer different biomes, and some want a nearby neighbor or certain items. A Merchant or Guide is usually one of the first NPCs to appear. Other NPCs unlock after bosses or events, so check which requirements your world meets.

Keep your town spaced out with a little room between houses. That makes it easier to see each NPC and to add new buildings later.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a gap in the walls, which makes the room invalid.
  • Expecting a specific NPC to move in before its unlock condition is met.
  • Placing houses too close together and blocking access.
