How do you get demonite ore in Terraria?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerDemonite ore appears in worlds with a Corruption, and you mine it underground with a pickaxe. Crimson worlds have crimtane ore instead, which works in similar early gear.

Where it spawns

Demonite ore spawns in the Corruption biome, which is one of the two evil biomes in Terraria. It appears in the underground Corruption layers, so you need a pickaxe that can mine it. In a Crimson world, the equivalent ore is crimtane, found in the Crimson biome.

Your world's evil biome is set when you create the world, so check which one you have before you go hunting. Both ores are used for early tools and armor that are useful before you reach harder bosses.

  • Corruption worlds: demonite ore
  • Crimson worlds: crimtane ore
  • Mine in the underground layers with a pickaxe
  • Check your world evil type first

Use the ore wisely

Demonite and crimtane are usually turned into bars at a furnace, then used at an anvil for crafting. Bars are the main upgrade material, so collect enough to make a full set of gear rather than a single piece.

Corruption and Crimson areas can be dangerous, with enemies that spread or attack in packs. Bring healing potions and a good weapon before you dig deep into them.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for demonite in a Crimson world, where it does not spawn.
  • Mining too little ore and getting stuck with a single item.
  • Going into the evil biome with no healing supplies.
